Types of Water Towers

The demolition techniques that will be used to demolish a water tower change depending on how that water tower was constructed, and on the materials it’s made of. Water towers can be grouped into several different types, including:

Spherical Water Tank Towers

These towers have spherical containers to hold water—they’re usually made of steel. The tank typically sits on a slender shaft.

Fluted Column Towers

These towers usually feature a cylindrical tank which sits on top of a fluted column. They’re typically constructed from steel or concrete.

Standpipe Towers

A standpipe tower is essentially one large water tank—they can be constructed from steel or concrete.

Multi Legged Towers

These towers can hold much larger water tanks thanks to the support offered by multiple legs.

Water towers have a unique construction, with large tanks perched atop supports. Heavy machinery and specialized equipment must be used to work through the materials, which are often constructed entirely of steel or concrete.

Typically, water towers are built near or in residential areas, which may be densely populated. Extra care must be taken to protect the people and property surrounding the water tower. Additionally, local by-laws and noise ordinances must be considered when planning the demolition.

Our Process

Each water tank or tower demolition project presents its own challenges; there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are a few steps in common. Here’s how our demolition team tackles planning and completing a project:

01.

Planning the demolition: Our team of engineers, architects, and demolition experts will analyze the water tank and tower, the surrounding area, the landscape, and several other factors to determine the right demolition techniques to use.

02.
Securing the permits: With a plan in place, our team will secure all of the necessary permits.
03.

Setting up the site: With the permits secured, we will begin setting up the site. We may use barriers to mitigate pollution and prevent damage, bring heavy equipment like cranes on-site, and more.

04.

Demolition: Depending on the project, we may utilize a wide variety of different controlled demolition techniques to demolish the water tower, including:

  • Removing and dismantling the water tank
  • Using controlled explosives to collapse the tower
  • Using heavy machinery to remove sections of the tower
  • And more
05.

Clean-up: Once the water tank and tower are dismantled and demolished, we’ll clean up the job site. We take care of debris removal, recycling, and more.
